VINIYOGA

The approach

We are unique individuals, all different shapes and sizes, with different starting points. The Sanskrit term Viniyoga translates as ‘unique application’ and so this approach to yoga is not just about bringing you to the posture, it’s also about bringing the posture to you. Here we modify postures to suit individual needs, circumstance and goals.

In this tradition of yoga the breath is central. Mindful movement is used in harmony with conscious breath which helps to focus and thereby still the mind. Using the breath in this way is a sustainable way to open the body and develop flexibility. Over time, this approach can help create emotional and physical resilience. Viniyoga is not about strenuous athletic ability. It doesn’t matter what your existing level of fitness or experience is. If you can breathe, you can practice yoga.

Viniyoga is an authentic form of yoga underpinned by yoga philosophy stemming from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. This approach is based on the teachings of Krishnamacharya and his continuing lineage. I am particularly grateful to my tutors Ranju Roy and David Charlton of Sadhana Mala whose approach, heavily influenced by Peter Hersnack, translates Yoga and the Yoga Sutra beautifully to contemporary life.
